The 2019-20 English Premier League season could be cancelled if teams refuse to play the remaining 92 fixtures in neutral venues League Managers Association (LMA) chief executive Richard Bevan said on Wednesday.

The Premier League has been on hold since mid-March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has killed more than 32,000 people in the United Kingdom, the highest death toll in Europe.

All 20 Premier League clubs have stated their commitment to completing the season and resolved to resume the season “when safe and appropriate to do so” following a meeting last Friday.

However, the form of competition is still a matter of debate with at least six clubs understood to be firmly opposed to the government’s directive allowing only neutral venues approved from a health and safety point of view to host games in the event of a resumption.

The Premier League’s plans – dubbed Project Restart – involve a return to action in June in order to complete the season at the end of July to fit in with Uefa’s European competition plans.

This would require full training to begin by 18 May.

Asked if the 2019/20 campaign would be cancelled if teams voted against playing in neutral venues, Bevan told the BBC here: “Yes, I think that probably is correct.”

“The government, if they haven’t already, will be making it clear that home matches with densely populated stadia, really puts into question whether social distancing rules can be adhered to.”
