France are the first team to book a quarterfinal spot at the ongoing FIFA World Cup tournament in Russia after they held off Argentina in a seven-goal thriller.

Paris Saint Germain (PSG) forward Kylian Mbappe was the star of the show for Les Blues as he netted twice to give France a 4-3 win in the last 16 clash.

Antoine Griezmann edged France ahead with a 13th minute penalty after Mbappe produced a solo run before he was fouled by Marcos Rojo in the box.

Mbappe’s club teammate, Angel Di Maria dragged La Albiceleste back into the game with a magnificent leveller just before halftime.

Argentina turned the game around after the interval to go ahead for the first time in the game through Gabriel Mercado off a Lionel Messi assist but that lead lasted for just nine minutes.

French right-back Benjamin Pavard scored the best goal of the game with a stunning strike to pull his side level paving the way for Mbappe show.

The in-form attacker hit the back of the net twice in four minutes to put France 4-2 ahead.

Substitute Sergio Aguero pulled one goal back in added time but France held on to secure a spot in the last eight.

France will now meet the winner of the Saturday night’s last 16 clash between Uruguay and Portugal in the quarterfinals.
