NWPL Matchday 11 Review: Three Away Wins Recorded As Super Four Takes Shape

Three superb away victories graced Matchday 11 of the Nigeria Women Premier League as the race for Super Four intensifies with just three more Matchdays left to the end of the regular season.

The top two places in Group A is beginning to look like a no contest for the chasing pack considering that Bayelsa Queens and Rivers Angels have exercised their strong hold on those positions with their respective wins on the road against Abia Angels and FC Robo Queens. Both teams currently share the same number of goals difference (+9) and points (19), however, Bayelsa Queens, who also have a game in hand, are the group leaders.

The Yenegoa-based side completed a double over Abia Angels at the Umuahia Township Stadium on Wednesday in spite of the hosts still brimming with the confidence drawn from their own away win over Heartland Queens last week.

Tessy Biawho’s sixth goal of the season from a freekick in the 67th minute, proved definitive in a match that singled out Abia Angels goalkeeper Omini Monle as one of the top performers.

Meanwhile, FC Robo Queens could not contain Rivers Angels’ quickfire approach at the Legacy Pitch of the National Stadium, Lagos.

The opening 20 minutes saw former Delta Queens winger, Alice Ogebe put the visitors in front, before further goals from Patience Kalu and substitute Ibinabo Georgewill sealed the win. Although FC Robo, who were losing at home for the first time, would go on to grab a consolation through captain Rasheedat Ajibade.

For the Jewel of Rivers however, it was a perfect bounce back after dropping two points at home to Ibom Angels last week.

In the third match of Group A, the woes of hapless Heartland Queens was compounded in Akure as they succumbed to a 4-0 spanking in the hands of Sunshine Queens.

A brace from Juliet Sunday and one each from Bolaji Olamide and Precious Vincent ensured emphatic victory for the Owena Mermaids.

In Group B, there is a new leader after Delta Queens dethroned Nasarawa Amazons for the first time in a long while.

So far this season, playing Saadatu Amazons have been the surest way to three points and Delta Queens made sure they took adequate advantage, sending four unreplied goals past their very weak opponents.

Elsewhere, Vivian Uwandi scored the curtain raiser in Benin as Edo Queens defeated Nasarawa Amazons 2-1. She completed her brace from the penalty spot later on before Nasarawa Amazons pulled one back.

Osun Babes taking on Confluence Queens was definitely one of the high profile matches of Wednesday, and having lost in the first stanza in Kogi, the Omoluabi Queens took their pound of flesh at their Osogbo Township Stadium.

Osun Babes were 2-0 up by the hour mark courtesy of goals from Abiodun Adedayo and Edewor Precious after which Confluence Queens tried to initiate a comeback. But Polinus Ifeoma’s goal was all they could mutter in their late rally.

Finally, Pelican Stars came from behind to share the spoils 1-1 with Adamawa Queens in Calabar.
