2021 AFCON: Injured Osimhen Doubtful For Benin Encounter

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen could miss Nigeria’s 2021 AFCON qualifier against Benin on 13 November after he pulled up injured in Lille’s 3-0 home win against Samuel Kalu’s Bordeaux at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy on Saturday.

The 20-year-old was substituted in the 58th minute of the match after appearing to injure his groin making him a doubt for Lille’s next match against Marseille.

Lille coach Christophe Galtier confirmed afterwards that the striker had felt “pain in the adductor” adding that Osimhen’s injury could pose a “problem”.

While Lille are yet to comment on the severity of the injury, adductor problems usually take about six weeks to heal although there is no suggestion that Osimhen would be out for that long.

An extended spell on the sidelines for the striker would pose a serious headache for Eagles coach Gernot Rohr with Nigeria scheduled to play Benin in the opening game of their AFCON 2021 qualifier on 13 November.

Having already lost first-choice goalkeeper Francis Uzoho to injury Rohr now looks likely to lose his first-choice striker although in Emmanuel Dennis, Paul Onuachu and Peter Olayinka the Franco-German possess adequate fall back options.
