2019 AFCON: Gernot Rohr Discloses Change in Tactics And Formation

Technical Adviser of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr has made a reference to the fact that there could be a change in the squad’s tactics and formation ahead of the 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The gaffer while speaking on TVC, also played down the need for a classic no. 10 in the Super Eagles’ 2019 AFCON squad.

According to goalball.com.ng, Rohr is convinced that Arsenal midfielder Alex Iwobi and Stoke City’s Oghenekaro Etebo can play in the role, pointing out Iwobi’s impressive performance against Libya in the role.

“I am not worried about it because we have a lot of players who can be natural playmakers. You know we have players like Etebo who can be a playmaker, he can also be a good defensive midfielder.

“We have Alex Iwobi who played in this position and did very well in Johannesburg, we have Ahmed Musa who is coming in from the left side and can give good balls and score himself,” Rohr said.

The Franco-German also indicated that there is an option of players cutting in from the wings to score, especially when he starts the AFCON with two strikers.

“You know that it is not necessary to have this position of number ten in modern football. Everybody must be able to make the play, to be a playmaker even the defensive midfielders or even the defenders have to give good balls and to construct the game,” he added.
