18-Year-Old Nigerian Defender Joins Ukranian Top Flight Side Olimpik Donetsk

Nigerian defender Igwekali Darlington Emmanuel has signed a 4 year deal with FC Olimpik Donetsk. After a tense battle between Swedish and Turkish clubs, Darlington decided to pitch tent with the Ukranian club.

Darlington made the switch from Turkish based club Alanyaspor that had Super Eagles defender Kenneth Omeruo on their books in the past.

He made eight appearances for the U-21 side this season, starting seven and winning all eight of those matches two out of which he kept clean sheets.

Commenting on his move to Olimpik Donetsk; the 18-year-old-said, “I thank God for making this day a reality. The journey has just started and I believe God will see me through this journey. I’m looking forward to winning trophies with my new team and participate in the Champions League or Europa League with them’’.

Olimpik Donetsk participated in the Europa League 2017/2018 season, but got knocked out in the 3rd Qualification Round by Greek team PAOK FC. Last season, they got to the Quarter Finals of the Ukrainian Cup and are currently placed 10th in the Premier League. 

His intermediary Reginald Emmanuel Igwekali who was absolutely delighted with the transfer said; “It was not an easy deal to close because we had so many suitors and I believe we have made the right decision. Olimpik Donetsk will help in his development looking at what they have on ground and what we discussed”. 

Darlington could be making his first bow with his new club immediately as they will be taking on Shakhtar Donetsk in a friendly on Wednesday.
