12th African Games: Flying Eagles Beat Mali On Penalties To Reach Final

The Flying Eagles of Nigeria are into the final of the Football event at the ongoing 12th African Games in Morocco after a 5-4 penalty shootout win over Mali on Tuesday, 27 August.

With nothing to separate both sides after regulation time and extra time both ended goalless, it fell to the lottery of penalties and Flying Eagles goalkeeper Detan Ogundare proved the hero with a game-winning save of Mali’s spot-kick to send Nigeria through.

Tuesday’s match was a bit of revenge for the Flying Eagles in the second straight game between both sides to be decided on penalties after the Malians came out on top in the semi-finals of this year’s Africa U20 Cup of Nations in Niger Republic after regulation time ended 1-1.

The Flying Eagles route to the final include a draw with Burkina Faso (1-1) and Morocco (2-2) and win over South Africa (2-1) before Tuesday’s victory over Mali.
